App Turns iPhone Into a Virtual User’s Manual for Audis

audi virtual owner's manual
Audi A1 or A3 owners now have the option of using an app to identify parts of their car. Created by Metaio, the app makers behind Ikea’s interactive catalog simulation, users point their cameras at certain parts of the car (buttons, knobs and even engine parts) for user information – a sort of virtual owner’s manual.

While we’re not so sure that anyone buying an Audi would have trouble knowing what each button or knob does, identifying parts of the engine could be helpful to less mechanically-inclined individuals. And the intuitive nature of the app will make it a continuously useful one among all the throwaways

iOS 7 smooths out iPhone apps on non-Retina iPads

iPad in hands (two-up, iPad, iPad mini)
With each passing day we learn more about the subtleties and under-the-hood tweaks that have made their way into the third beta of iOS 7. Today, I want to talk about the iPad’s 2x compatibility mode. Hasn’t it always bothered you how iPhone apps run pixel-doubled on your iPad mini and other non-Retina iPad devices, resulting in jagged corners and edges and just all-around pixelated appearance?
You can tick that issue off as iOS 7 Beta 3 added a new feature that makes every iPhone app look very clear running on an iPad 2 or iPad mini, in a manner reminiscent of a tweakfor jailbroken devices by Ryan Petrich, called RetinaPad…
iDB, along with other publications like MacRumors, received a tip about this feature.
Rather than pixel-double iPhone apps, iOS 7 now appears to take advantage of Retina assets included in the app’s binary. Since Retina iPhones currently top out at the iPhone 5′s 640-by-1,136 resolution, the trick allows for a much smoother and crisper appearance on non-Retina iPads which have a 768-by-1,024 screen (the iPad mini, iPad 2 and the original iPad).
Here’s a side-by-side example of the App Store storefront app on an iPad mini in 2x mode on iOS 6 (left) and default 2x on iOS 7 (right).
iOS 7 2x mode comparison
Click for larger.
Notice how the fonts, the user interface elements and the bitmaps all appear crisper on the right image. Interestingly enough, whereas Retina iPads continue to offer the 2x toggle, the button is gone now on non-Retina iPads as those devices automatically lock iPhone apps in 2x mode.
Here’s Jeff’s video highlighting 2x handling on Retina and non-Retina iPads.
It should be noted that Apple since the arrival of the iPad 3 started using Retina assets in iPhone apps to smooth out their appearance in the 2x mode on the tablet. iOS 7 Beta 3 seems to have brought this improvement over to non-Retina iPads.
As of May, all apps are required to support Retina iDevices (iPhone apps must support the four-inch display on the iPhone 5) so this will go a long way toward improving their presentation on non-Retina iPads on iOS 7.
Back when Steve Jobs took the stage in January 2010 to introduce the iPad to the world, the tablet had only a handful of apps specifically tailored to its bigger screen. Apple didn’t want to limit app availability so its engineers devised a way to upscale iPhone-only apps.
Hence, the 2x mode was born.
iPad introduction 201004 (Steve Jobs demo 001)
In a nutshell, the trickery is in taking each pixel of an iPhone app and turning it into a two-by-two square block.
The approach helped render 480-by-320 iPhone apps as 960-by-640 on the iPad’s 1,024-by-768 screen, filling up way more of the tablet’s screen.
More importantly for Apple, the 2x mode allowed the then 150,000 iPhone apps to just work on the iPad. Fast-forward to 2013 and we now have 375,000 apps tailored to the iPad’s larger canvas.
But with 900,000 apps in the App Store, we still have 525,000 iPhone-only apps so you could make an argument that the 2x mode is relevant today as it was back then.
Speaking of the RetinaPad tweak, Jeff lauded it as “simply one of the best tweaks for the iPad” in his  January 2012 list of the best jailbreak tweaks for iPad.
Should you happen to run a bunch of iPhone-only apps on your tablet, it’s a must-have for it adds clearness to the iPad’s 2x mode, which makes a huge difference with certain apps.

    BDP-S490 Blu-ray 3D player by SONY

Sony BDP-S490The BDP-S490 is inexpensive, but that doesn’t mean it’s lacking in features. It's ready for 3D playback, has the same Smart TV features as Sony's TVs and is fully DLNA compatible, which means you can stream videos and music from network storage or a PC.
With curved edges and a brushed metal finish, the BDP-S490 looks sleek and modern. Aside from the disc tray and flap covering the single USB port, there's nothing on the front of the unit to detract from the minimalist design until you turn it on, when a single-line white LCD display is revealed. The four buttons across the top surface – Power, Play, Stop and Eject – give you the minimum level of control, with the majority saved for the compact remote.
Sony has simplified the system around the back too, with a minimal selection of ports and outputs. There's a single HDMI output and composite outputs for connecting to an AV amplifier or directly to a TV. You have the choice of analogue RCA, digital optical and S/PDIF audio outputs, so you'll be able to connect it to an older AV amplifier that doesn't support HDMI. There's also a Fast Ethernet port and a second USB port that’s intended for temporary BD-Live storage or an optional wireless dongle (UWABR100 USB, £64 from www.amazon.co.uk).
    Sony BDP-S490
There are a number of reasons to connect the player to your network. It supports DLNA, as mentioned, and can search the Gracenote media database every time you insert a disc, downloading artwork, genre and cast details for films or track names for music. You can also access Sony Entertainment Network (SEN), Sony's comprehensive online portal.
    Sony BDP-S490
Sony's XMB interface hasn't changed in years and it's starting to show its age
Virtually identical to the version found on Sony's current smart TV line-up, SEN gives you access to both the Video Unlimited and Music Unlimited services, which contain hundreds of films distributed by Sony Pictures and artists on Sony's music label. TV show episodes and films can be rented for around £3, or bought for £15 if you choose the high definition versions (standard definition downloads cost less), while you can subscribe to the Music Unlimited service to stream as many songs as you like for £10 per month. Both services have plenty of big name titles on board, and SEN also has LoveFilm and Netflix portals.
Catch-up TV from BBC iPlayer and Demand 5, news from Sky and Eurosport, online video from YouTube and Daily Motion and a dedicated 3D content channel will also ensure you don't run out of content if you manage to exhaust your Blu-ray collection. With a redesigned interface that should feel familiar to anyone who's used the Windows 8 Start screen, we were able to navigate quickly between apps and find the videos we most wanted to watch.
    Sony BDP-S490
It's an improvement over the XMB interface found on the main menu. Sony has been using the same design since it introduced it with the PlayStation 3, and although it's easy to understand it can be tricky to find all your content; if you aren't meticulous with file names you'll spend a long time flicking through lists.
This problem persists when playing your own files, either locally through a USB flash drive or over the network. Folders filled with files can take time to navigate, especially as the system doesn't generate thumbnails until after you've played a clip. At least file format support was decent, letting us play MP4, MKV, WMVHD and Xvid files.

The BDP-S490 is reasonably quick, starting up in around 10 seconds and loading Blu-ray discs in around 15. We experienced no problems with it, although we’d have liked a few more image quality settings apart from a choice of Standard, Bright Room or Theatre picture modes. You also have the option to set levels of block and MPEG noise reduction, but this isn't necessary when watching Blu-ray discs. Instead, you'll need to adjust your TV if you aren't happy with colour or brightness.
Thankfully, we didn't feel the need to make many changes. Our reference footage looked slightly lighter than it appears on other Blu-ray players, with the very darkest blacks losing a little prominence, but films looked great for the most part. It dealt with shadows superbly, bringing out every bit of detail in our chosen scenes. Colours were vibrant and images were pin-sharp, really bringing out the film grain of the 2009 Star Trek movie at 1080p.
    Sony BDP-S490 vs PS3
Star Trek (Blu-ray) - A 100% pixel crop from the HDMI output of the player at default settings ...
    Sony BDP-S490 vs PS3
... and the same grab from a PlayStation 3 - click either to enlarge
The BDP-S490 coped reasonably well with DVD upscaling. There was an acceptable level of noise at standard settings and the film grain was mostly preserved after block noise and MPEG noise reduction had been enabled. However, we did notice some slight colour discrepancies with a slightly yellow colour cast that wasn't present when watching Blu-ray discs. It wasn't enough to stop us enjoying films, but when sat side-by-side there was a noticeable difference.
Apart from a few minor image quality concerns, which are even less of an issue if you stick to Blu-ray and avoid DVD, the only real criticism for the BDP-S490 is the omission of Wi-Fi. With so many online services, it would be a waste not to connect the system to the internet, but you might as well buy the more expensive BDP-S590 instead of buying a separate £62 Wi-Fi dongle, as it has built-in Wi-Fi. Even so, if you have yet to upgrade to a Smart TV but have an Ethernet cable wired into your AV rack, the BDP-S490 would make a comprehensive addition to your home cinema.
